Incentives available from 1 November 2024

If you’re eligible, there are several rebates and incentives available to help reduce the cost of installing solar or battery systems:

  • Battery installation rebates:
    • Between $1,600 and $2,400 off the upfront installation cost of a battery for households and small businesses with existing solar PV systems, depending on the size of the battery.
    • An additional rebate of $250 to $400 for connecting your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This incentive is available twice, with a minimum of three years between claims.
  • For homes and businesses without solar:
    • The installation incentive can be factored into the quote for a new solar panel and battery system.
  • Supplier options:
    • The rebate is typically offered as an upfront discount by approved suppliers. Different suppliers may provide a variety of products, services, and additional incentives, allowing you to shop around and choose what works best for your household or business.

These incentives, provided by the NSW government, aim to make solar and battery installations more affordable, reducing energy bills while promoting energy efficiency and sustainability across New South Wales.

What are the requirements for NSW rebates?

To take advantage of the NSW solar battery rebate program, homes and businesses must meet specific criteria. These requirements are designed to ensure safety, promote energy efficiency, and enhance grid stability across NSW.

1. Rooftop solar installation

To qualify, your home or business must already have a rooftop solar PV system installed. This ensures that the energy storage from the battery can be used effectively with the existing solar panels.

2. Use of an approved supplier

The battery must be installed by an accredited supplier, known as Accredited Certificate Providers (ACPs), under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). These suppliers are accredited by the Independent Pricing And Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) and must adhere to strict safety and regulatory standards. This helps ensure the quality and reliability of your solar battery system.

3. Battery size requirements

The installed battery must have a capacity between 2kWh and 28kWh, which is suitable for most homes and small businesses. This range supports typical energy usage while allowing for sufficient storage to reduce electricity bills.

4. Virtual Power Plant (VPP) participation for additional incentives

If you connect your solar battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), you may be eligible for an additional incentive. This incentive can be claimed twice, with a minimum of three years between claims. Pre-existing batteries may also qualify for the VPP incentive if they meet certain conditions, such as having at least six years of warranty remaining.

5. New installations only

The battery installation incentive applies only to new installations. Existing batteries aren’t eligible for this specific incentive. However, if you have a pre-installed battery, it may still qualify for the VPP incentive if enrolled in a VPP and meeting the required conditions.

6. Grid-connected systems

Your home or business must be connected to the electricity grid to be eligible. Off-grid systems don’t qualify for these rebates. The focus is on promoting battery storage to support grid stability and reduce emissions across NSW.

What are the Benefits of the Home Battery Rebate Program?

The NSW home battery rebate program offers valuable assistance for households and businesses looking to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency. By participating in the program, you can take steps to enhance the reliability of your electricity supply while contributing to the state’s renewable energy goals.

Maximising the use of solar energy

Installing a solar battery system allows NSW residents to store excess energy generated by rooftop solar PV systems during the day. This stored energy can then be used at night or during peak periods, reducing reliance on the electricity grid and lowering your electricity bill. For small businesses and households with solar PV systems, this is a smart choice for reducing energy costs.

Lowering energy bills

Using stored solar energy means less dependency on grid power during high-rate periods. With electricity prices rising, the ability to tap into stored energy is an effective way to save money. Eligible households and small businesses can benefit significantly, especially low-income households or those holding a valid pensioner concession card.

Supporting renewable energy goals

The rebate program helps NSW meet its targets to reduce emissions by encouraging the adoption of solar batteries. By doing so, the program supports the shift toward renewable energy and lessens dependence on fossil fuels. It’s a practical step for eligible customers to contribute to a cleaner energy future.

Potential Challenges and What to Keep in Mind

The upcoming NSW home battery rebate program offers significant opportunities but also presents potential challenges for NSW residents and small businesses. Understanding these factors can help you make an informed decision and avoid unexpected costs related to your solar PV system.

Expected price increases

Battery prices are expected to rise after 1 November 2024, as demand increases due to the introduction of NSW government rebates. For eligible households and small businesses, the higher demand could drive up the cost of solar batteries, potentially reducing the financial benefits of waiting for the rebate. Acting now to purchase a solar battery system may help you avoid these increased costs.

Uncertainty around program details

The specific solar batteries eligible for the rebate, along with the exact benefits the NSW government will offer, are still being finalised. This uncertainty makes it challenging for households and businesses to make a decision. However, keeping an eye on updates about eligible systems and rebates can help you stay informed and ready to take advantage of the energy rebate.

Acting early to secure better deals

To avoid the rush and potential price increases, eligible customers are encouraged to explore their options and install solar batteries before the rebate begins. This proactive approach can help you lock in current deals and avoid future price surges, especially as energy costs continue to rise. For NSW residents and small businesses, early action means lower energy bills and greater savings.

If you’re considering installing a solar battery system, don’t wait. Schedule a consultation today and lock in savings before the NSW rebate program launches.

How can NSW businesses transition to electric fleets with financial support?

The NSW government is providing funding to help businesses transition their fleets to Electric Vehicles (EVs) through the Electric Vehicle Fleets Incentive program. This initiative supports businesses in adopting more sustainable transportation solutions by offering financial incentives for purchasing Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and installing smart chargers.

1. Incentive Details

Eligible NSW businesses can receive varying amounts of funding depending on the type of vehicle they procure.

The incentives are as follows:

  • Passenger Vehicles (PVs) and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs): $5,000 per vehicle and $1,200 per charging port.
  • Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) up to 4.5 tonnes: $8,000 per vehicle and $1,200 per charging port.
  • Light trucks up to 4.5 tonnes: $10,000 per vehicle and $3,000 per charging port.

2. Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for this incentive, organisations must operate a fleet of at least three vehicles, including Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrids, Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs), or BEVs. Alternatively, individuals or organisations that own at least one licensed taxi in NSW are also eligible to apply.

3. Program Timeline

Applications for the Electric Vehicle Fleets Incentive are open until 30 June 2025, or until the funding is fully expended, whichever occurs first. This incentive provides a valuable opportunity for eligible businesses to start transitioning their fleet to more environmentally friendly Electric Vehicles, helping to reduce emissions and cut operational costs over time.
