What is a level 2 ASP electrician?
A level 2 electrician is an electrician that can work on all electrical components associated with the premise, as well as the service mains connected to the street supply.
My switchboard needs upgrading. Do I need to use a Level 2 ASP?
A switch upgrade often requires disconnection of the consumer mains and upgrading service equipment. This scope of works will need to be carried out by a Level 2 Electrician.
Why have I received a defect notice?
A defect notice can be issued by the Local Network, your Electricity Retailer or a Metering Provider. It is a safety notice detailing the electrical hazards that need to be remedied. A major defect will require immediate action and the customer will have their power disconnected until it is rectified. Non-immediate hazards will require the customer to rectify the hazard in a timely fashion and notify the Defect Issuer.
Why do I need a private pole?
A private pole is the modern standard for overhead electrical connections. It is installed at the property’s boundary and limits the overhead cable route running across neighbouring properties. Generally, the cable from the private pole is then run underground which enhances aesthetics and minimises electrical hazards.
Can I relocate my switchboard or Point of Attachment (POA)?
Yes, switchboards and Points of Attachment (POAs) are often relocated during renovations. This can be a good opportunity to improve both the aesthetics of the property as well as the safety of the electrical installation.
Can I upgrade my 1 phase supply to 3 phase?
Customers often upgrade their supply from 1 phase to 3 phase. This can be due to the extra efficiency and demand of AC units, EV fast chargers and high output machinery. The particulars will depend on how the premise has its current supply connected. A site inspection will be required.
Does my house require a rewire?
Electrical standards have evolved to a very high standard over the past decades. What was acceptable as a ‘safe’ installation in the past, may now not be deemed adequate for the protection of persons and property. Some key areas to inspect are: Size of service mains and consumer mains (the size of the cable from the street to the switchboard) , size of the main earth conductor and earth stake , the type of cable I.e VIR, cotton braided, unearthed, oxidised cable, green goo on cable.
Do I need to upgrade the cable to my house?
The current minimum standard for service mains and consumer mains to a property is 25mm2 and 16mm2 respectively. A large number of properties in Sydney have 6mm2 and 10mm2 cabling. This may not be adequate for the higher power demands of modern households.
My service mains run over my driveway. Can I have it redirected?
Yes, the route of service mains can be redirected. A private pole can be installed at the property’s boundary or the POA (Point of Attachment) can be relocated.
How can I be sure that the electrical system in my house is safe?
Key areas to check are: subcircuit protection (e.g. circuit breakers, safety switches, RCBO’s, fuses) , cable condition, type and size , main earth size, connection type and stake , testing of fault loop impedance, earth resistance, final subcircuits.
My switchboard has an asbestos sticker. Is this regarded as safe and can I have the board removed?
Asbestos was widely used for its electrical insulating properties and was previously considered ‘safe’ to work on. These days, it is considered a hazardous substance and switchboards with this type of panel are being replaced with a Type X Insulating Panel. The panel will need to be removed and disposed of by trained workers.
